Best from Waste Material: Top 5 Ways to Use Leftover Vegetable Scraps

Taikhum Sadiq

Often times while dumping the leftover peels and seeds of fruits and veggies, you might think to yourself of using these in some way. But then, in the haste of getting done with household chores, completely forget about it. Well, you're not alone in this. So, to help you out in deciding what to do with the peels, here are five different ways in which you can use them and get the most of them.

Spring Onions – Most commonly, spring onions are used in garnishing dishes. Due to their multipurposeness, spring onions are quite expensive but do you know you can easily grow them in your backyard and save some of your hard-earned money?

  • The first step is to collect the left-out white roots of the onion from your kitchen.
  • Partially put them in a container with water to wet the roots but do not submerge them.
  • Keep the container in sunlight, and within a few days, the new plant will start growing.
  • Use the plant in ways you like, and always remember to put the root back in for the new saplings to sprout.

Lemon Grass – This is another edible that is beneficial in many ways. Just as spring onions, lemongrass is also grown by putting the old plant in a container.

  • After the new lemongrass sapling appears, transfer it to a pot filled with soil. Once the grass reaches a foot in height, you can harvest it.
  • Always remember to let the roots stay so that you can harvest the grass whenever you want to.

Ginger – It is yet another kitchen item you can easily grow at home.

  • Take a small piece of ginger with some of its buds still present.
  • Take the piece and place it in a pot with soil. Remember that the buds should face upwards; also, don't place in direct sunlight.
  • Soon enough, the plant will start sprouting. Once the plant is grown, you can harvest it and replant a piece of the plant just like before

Potatoes – Need I say how darn important potatoes are in the kitchen? Potatoes make everything taste better, and lucking they can be easily grown at home too.

  • Take a small potato with buds on it.
  • Place it in the soil and water it daily, and within a couple of weeks, you will have half a dozen tiny patooties sprouting. All it takes is one small potato to grow half a dozen more.

Vegetable Stocks from Scraps- Apart from sowing the seeds, you can also use peels of vegetables and fruits that make most of your kitchen waste. You can use your favorite vegetable peel simmer it on low flame for a few minutes, and add some spices to it.

Organic scrubs and moisturizer - Sundry orange peels for 2-3 days and grind it. Add a little yogurt and honey to two tablespoons of fine mix and apply it to your face. Scrub it off after 15 minutes and rinse your face with cold water for glowing skin.
