How To Use A Nebulizer?

How To Use A Nebulizer?

What is a nebulizer?

A nebulizer machine turns liquid medicine into a mist which is then efficiently moved into your lungs. Patients suffering from asthma, COPD, or another respiratory disease commonly use the nebulizer, also called a breathing or nebulizer treatment. Using a nebulizer is an easy and convenient way to breathe the medicine into your lungs. People suffering from asthma may prefer to use an inhaler instead, which is usually just as effective. However, nebulizers are known to deliver medicine with less effort and are more user-friendly (especially for children) than an inhaler. Most nebulizers are small and portable, which makes them easy to carry and transport.

Most nebulizers function by using air compressors; they are known as jet nebulizers. Another option includes an ultrasonic nebulizer which uses sound vibrations to deliver the medicine. Ultrasonic nebulizers are quick and noise-free, making them more comfortable.

How to use a nebulizer?

To use a nebulizer -

  1. Properly wash your hands with soap and water. It prevents the risk of germs getting into your lungs.
  2. Keep the machine on a hard surface. Make sure the air filter is clean. For safety, rinse the air filter with cold water and let it air dry. Plug the air filter into the nebulizer.
  3. Prepare your medicine; use a dropper or syringe to place the medicine in the container. Fill the nebulizer medicine container with your prescription if the medicine is premixed.
  4. Adding saline (salt water) to your medicine container might be suggested. Sterile saline helps clear congestion, dust, and debris while improving the ability to smell and gain clearer breathing. You can also put homemade saline solution for nebulizer for nasal irrigation or buy CareFusion AirLife Modudose Unit Dose Saline, a unit dose vial for inhalation therapy. It can be used with any nebulizer and contains 0.9 percent sodium chloride. Close the medicine cup tightly and hold the mouthpiece straight up and down to avoid spills and wastage.
  5. Connect the medicine container to the nebulizer using the hose or tubing. The nebulizer mask or mouthpiece should be connected to the top of the container.
  6. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between the teeth. Firmly close your lips around the mouthpiece. You can also place the nebulizer mask on your face. It is especially recommended for small children.
  7. Turn on the nebulizer and take slow deep breaths through your mouth. Keep the medicine container in an upright position. Breathe for about 15 minutes until the mist is gone.
  8. Turn the nebulizer machine off. Thoroughly wash the medicine container and mouthpiece with water and let it air dry.

Why use a breathing machine?

Nebulizer treatments are commonly used to treat chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung infections (pneumonia), and severe allergic reactions. It can successfully alleviate symptoms of respiratory ailments such as airway inflammation, shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing.

Top Portable Nebulizers

These nebulizers, also called hand-held nebulizers, provide users with more freedom of movement as they operate while being held. A 12V DC auto adaptor or a battery generally powers these nebulizers. Portable nebulizers are lighter and smaller than tabletop nebulizers. Here are HPFY's 3 best portable nebulizers

Best Nebulizer Compressors

Compressors are the systems that push the medicated mist into the lungs via a nebulizer system. These come as either stationary plug-in devices or battery-powered devices for portable nebulizers. Nebulizer compressors come in various designs to cater to people with specific respiratory needs, like bronchitis or cystic fibrosis.

Caring for nebulizer parts

After each nebulizer treatment, the medicine container, mouthpiece, or mask must be cleaned with soap and hot water. You can let the nebulizer parts air dry or turn the machine on after attaching the parts to dry them quickly. Store the dry pieces in a clean place. It is recommended to disinfect the machine on alternate days after breathing treatment. You can use 1 part diluted white vinegar and 3 parts hot water and soak the nebulizer pieces (except for the mask) in the mixture for 1 hour.
