What is Glycogen Storage Disease?
Glucose (a type of sugar) is a key source of energy for the body. The body stores glucose as glycogen. Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD) is a condition where the body cannot release glucose from the glycogen stores due to a liver enzyme deficiency. When this happens, the level of glucose in the blood (the blood sugar level) can drop too low. There are eleven different types of GSD which are determined by the part of the body that is affected by the enzyme deficiency. All types of GSD affect the body’s ability to either make or utilize glucose as a form of energy.
The key to the management of GSD is to maintain normal blood glucose/sugar levels. GSD management varies depending on the type of GSD and the symptoms. A doctor will develop a dietary regimen based on specific symptoms.

Glycosade Processed Medical Food FAQs
What is Glycosade?
Vitaflo has worked with leading metabolic centers, scientists and individuals with GSD in the development of Glycosade, a hydrothermally processed high amylopectin cornstarch that can help keep blood sugar levels within the normal reference range for longer compared to uncooked cornstarch.
Why use Glycosade?
Clinical evaluation comparing Glycosade to uncooked cornstarch for overnight dietary management of GSD has shown that Glycosade:
- Significantly prolongs the duration of normoglycemia to support longer overnight fasting
- Allows a more gradual decrease of blood glucose levels, reducing the risk of a rapid onset of hypoglycemia
- Supports adherence and quality of sleep due to avoidance of a middle-of-the-night dose
- Supports metabolic control, which is expected to positively impact long-term health outcomes
