Frequently asked questions

Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder that is caused by a non-progressive brain injury or malformation that occurs while the child’s brain is under development. It is primarily described by loss or impairment of motor function

Cerebral Palsy commonly affects body movements, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance. It may also impact fine motor skills, gross motor skills and oral motor functioning.

Crebral palsy can be due to:

  • Bleeding in the brain while the fetus is in the womb or during birth
  • Lack of blood flow to important organs
  • Seizures at birth or in the first month of life
  • Genetic conditions
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)

There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but treatment may help manage symptoms and increase independence. Treatment may depend totally on individual needs. The aim is to help the child achieve the highest degree of independence possible.
