9 Reasons Why You Must Invest Patient-Centered Care

9 Reasons Why You Must Invest Patient-Centered Care
Taikhum Sadiq

Patient care refers to the therapies, treatment methods, and items that are together used to improve the experience of the patient while undergoing treatment for a condition or disease. There are several things that constitute patient care which include feeding aids, clothes, clothing aids, positioners, bedding accessories, urinary products, anti-septic, etc.

These products help in easing the time the patient goes through treatment by helping them rest, clothe themselves, and perform other basic activities like sleeping, eating, urinating, etc.

Top 9 Benefits of Patient-Centered Care

1. Aids in feeding the patients

Patient care involves the concept of enteral feeding, which refers to the direct delivery of nutritious food to the stomach, duodenum, or jejunum. The feeding is done with the help of a feeding tube that is inserted either through the nose (nasally), through the mouth, or through a stoma (surgically) made on the stomach or the intestines.

The food supplied through the tube is liquid and directly enters the digestive system of the person. It is usually conducted for patients critically ill patients or those suffering from gastrointestinal cancer, pancreatitis, malnutrition, or other complications of the digestive system.

Feeding pumps are attached to feeding tubes through which tube-feeding liquid or food is supplied to the stomach or the intestines. They work in tandem with the digestive system to ensure that the body receives adequate nutrition.

2. Keeps the patients comfortable

The treatment process of any condition requires the comfort and safety of the patent, and hence wearing clothes that might make you uncomfortable can be a hindrance in your treatment process. The clothes one wears should be comfortable, medically accurate, and safe for the person.

Wearing something too tight or something that you are allergic to can increase discomfort and pain. Hence, hospital supplies take care of your clothing needs as well by putting out the right kind of clothing for patients suffering from different conditions. For example, wearing loose clothes is one of the first steps to aid healing in most conditions, whereas some conditions might want you to wear perfectly fitting or tight garments.

Gowns, aprons, robes, and shorts are some of the types of clothes your hospital or doctor would recommend you wear while undergoing treatment. Wearing clothes made of cotton, nylon, latex, etc., have different reasons; depending on your need, you can choose from any of these.

3. Protects the patients

Clothing protectors are basic items used to protect clothes from getting stained, soiled, or torn. A majority of this bracket of items is bibs or aprons that help in preventing the clothes from getting stained or soiled. Many are made from absorbent material that doesn’t let the food fall right onto your clothes.

While some, on the other hand, are made of waterproof underpads and cloth protectors that let the food roll right off, thus reducing all chances of the clothes getting stained. They fit snugly around the neck and go right up to the hip protecting the upper clothing with ease.

4. Transport patients from one place to another

This basically includes the use of patient positioners, which are items of a specific shape that, when used, align the patient in the position needed for the treatment or rehab program. This usually includes the use of neck & head positioners, positioning wedges, torso positioners, immobilizers, etc.

Hip positioners are one of the most common types of patient positioners. They are wedge-shaped pillows that go between the leg and allow the patient to expand the legs, lift the legs, raise the elevation of the hip, etc., for a temporary period.

5. Makes them sleep comfortably

In-patient care, bedding needs include pillows, pillowcases, cushions, mattresses, blankets, and quilts. These items are specially designed, keeping in mind the medical aspect of their use. They are made of materials that are soft and comfortable and do not cause skin irritation if used for a prolonged period. Many of them are made of materials that are hypoallergenic and are super absorbent. The fabric is also breathable, thus minimizing the ostomy or urine odor.

6. Ensures proper medications

Medicine cups are another part of patient care that help patients measure their medicine intake. The cups are made to be drink-friendly with material light enough for the patient to lift easily. They have a measuring scale on the side to allow the patient to measure how much medicine is needed. Overdosing or under-dosing medicines can be a health risk, and hence measuring the medicine intake is important.

7. Ensures personal hygiene

Hygiene is important for quicker recovery. Personal hygiene products such as wipes and leg bags are used to collect either exudate or other liquid or solid waste. These bags or cases are shaped like a kidney and are used in almost all medical institutions in the world. Emesis bags are elongated bags made of either rubber or latex and are used for the same purpose. The emesis bags can be sealed and can be washed easily.

8. Prevents incontinence episodes

Bedpans are items that are used for bedridden or patients dealing with incontinence. They are like mini urinals that can be used to urinate without having to go to the bathroom. They come in different shapes and can be used by both men and women. They are usually made of composite plastic and are waterproof in nature.

9. Prevents infection

Antiseptic products are the ones that keep infections away. This includes everything from tissues, pads, clothes, and mats to gels, liquids, aerosols, and creams. They eliminate the microbes that might cause infections. Infection control products are also used for cleaning clothes, homes, furniture, medical tools, etc.
