10 Causes of Frequent Urination in Women

10 Causes of Frequent Urination in Women
Shweta Chaubey

Frequent urination in women is a common concern that can disrupt daily life and raise questions about overall health. If you are going through this, please know that you are not alone in wondering why you constantly have to make trips to the restroom. There can be many reasons behind it.

In this article, we will discuss some probable causes of frequent urination in women and what can be done to treat the condition.

What causes frequent urination in women?

1. Overactive Bladder (OAB)

According to an article by our in-house WOCN expert, Christine Kijek, overactive bladder is one of many types of urinary incontinence. An overactive bladder causes a frequent and urgent need to empty the bladder.

When the bladder is getting full, the brain sends a signal, a feeling to void or empty the bladder. With an overactive bladder, the signal occurs when the bladder is not full. For some people with OAB, the bladder muscles are hyperactive, leading to frequent urination.

2. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Urinary Tract Infections are notorious for causing frequent urination in women, burning sensations, and discomfort. Women are more susceptible to UTIs due to their shorter urethra. These infections affect the urinary system and are usually treated with antibiotics.

3. Pregnancy

If you are an expectant mother, this could explain the constant urge to pee. During pregnancy, the growing uterus and hormonal changes put pressure on your bladder, leading to frequent urination, especially during the first and third trimesters. While this is generally normal, it can be inconvenient. However, it typically eases after childbirth.

4. Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis can also lead to frequent urge to urinate. It is a chronic disorder that can irritate and inflame the bladder and cause discomfort. Women with interstitial cystitis often experience urinary urgency and frequency, along with pelvic pain. If you suspect you might have IC, consult your doctor for accurate diagnosis and treatment options.

5. Diabetes

High blood glucose levels make you thirsty, leading to a more frequent urge to urinate. According to an article by Healthline, frequent urination is a symptom of hyperglycemia. Additionally, improper diabetes management can result in a condition called polyuria, which makes the body produce extreme amounts of urine.

6. Menopause

As women age, their estrogen levels decrease, courtesy of menopause. Estrogen is responsible for keeping the bladder and urethra healthy, and a diminished level can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, leading to frequent urination in women.

7. Vaginitis

Vaginitis is a group of disorders that make the vagina infected or inflamed, causing it to burn when you urinate and have the urge to urinate more frequently.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, these vaginal disorders are often a result of infections caused by organisms like bacteria, yeast, or viruses. Sometimes, vaginitis can result from organisms passed between intimate partners during sexual activity, vaginal dryness, or lack of estrogen.

8. Nocturia

According to a research paper by the National Center of Biotechnology Information, nocturia is frequent urination during the night. Nocturia is the most bothersome of all urinary symptoms and one of the most common. It can be associated with long-term sleeplessness.

9. Stress or anxiety

Frequent urination in women may also be a result of stress or anxiety. Both these conditions can put immense pressure on the body. When pressure is overwhelming, it can weaken the brain's urination signal, leading to anxiety urination.

10. Certain Medications

Certain medications such as sedatives, diuretics, and muscle relaxants can also cause frequent urination as a common side effect. These medicines work by getting rid of the excessive water in the body, making one urinate more frequently.

Natural remedies for frequent urination in females

1. Kegel Exercises

One cool way to help control frequent urination in women is through Kegel exercises. These exercises target the pelvic floor muscles. The stronger the pelvic muscles, the better the bladder control. You can also use Kegel exercisers to improve your bladder health.

2. Use of Assistive Products

Sometimes, we need a little extra help. Incontinence products like bladder control pads and adult diapers can aid in managing your symptoms. These can give you confidence and peace of mind. They are discreet and comfortable.

3. Diet Change

What you eat can influence your bladder. Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, and acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits. These can irritate your bladder and urge you to pee more often. Add bladder-friendly foods such as bananas, oats, and yogurt instead to your diet.

4. Limiting Certain Beverages

Caffeinated and alcoholic drinks can be bladder bullies! Both alcohol and caffeine can irritate the bladder and cause painful and frequent urges to pee in women. Avoid them as much as you can, especially before going to bed.

5. Hydration

Dehydration can worsen urinary incontinence. Ensure you drink enough water, but avoid chugging large amounts in one go, especially before bedtime, since it can lead to frequent urination at night.

6. Weight Management

Carrying extra pounds can pressure your bladder, making frequent urination more common. Working on shedding a few pounds through a balanced diet and exercise eases the pressure on your bladder.

7. Stress Management

As mentioned above, anxiety or stress can lead to a need to pee more often. Try relaxing your mind and body using techniques like deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or relaxation products to manage stress. It's good for your mind and your bladder!

Everybody is different, so what worked for one person may not work for another. While these natural remedies can work wonders to provide relief, it is essential to consult your doctor to find the cause of frequent urination and treatment options.
