What is Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) Therapy?

Positive airway pressure is a type of therapy that involves respiratory ventilation. It is basically used in the treatment of medical conditions like sleep apnea. This type of ventilation is also used for newborn babies or neonates, those with respiratory failures or people with atelectasis who have difficulty in taking deep breaths. PAP therapy can also prevent the need for tracheal intubation or help in early extubation. Doctors also prefer this therapy in case of neuromuscular disease treatments.

Sleep Apnea: Symptoms and Treatment

Sleep therapy is a series of treatments that are designed specifically to eliminate sleep related disorders. The most common sleeping disorder is the sleep apnea that causes the breath to stop or shallow down in sleep. These pauses can occur as often as 5-30 times in an hour and starts again with a loud snort or choking sound. This disease disrupts a person’s normal breathing patterns and the person gets into shallow sleep from deep sleep. The person may feel dizzy and dull throughout the day and may doze off very often during the day. PAP is the most commonly used therapy for sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Supplies at HPFY

HPFY offers several PAP therapy devices to treat sleep apnea ensuring a comfortable sleep throughout the night. Some people are able to tolerate a steady and gentle flow of air during sleep while some of them can not. For them there are devices that offer variations in pressure. These devices use a positive airway pressure which is applied to the upper airway through a facial mask. Types of PAP devices include:

CPAP Systems

BiPAP Systems

CPAP Vs. BiPAP

CPAP machines are the most commonly used devices for obstructive sleep apnea. These devices deliver a steady, continuous stream of air pressure to the upper airways preventing them from collapsing. First a CPAP titration study is conducted based on which your doctor determines the settings for your CPAP device to set it to deliver that required amount of pressure in a continuous manner. But these devices can only be set for a single level of pressure throughout the night.

Bi-PAP systems on the other hand works in conjugation with the respiratory process that is high pressure on inhalation and low pressure on exhalation.

Frequently asked questions

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP machine is a device that makes use of mild air pressure to keep the airways open and prevent the throat muscles from collapsing. CPAP is used for treating sleep-associated breathing disorders such as sleep apnea and to treat preterm infants with under-developed lungs.

The CPAP tubing is recommended to be cleaned on a weekly basis by washing it with warm, soapy water. Rinse well and keep it in direct sunlight for drying. The CPAP mask should be replaced every 3-6 months and CPAP cushion once or twice a month.

A Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure or BiPAP machine is similar to a CPAP and designed to deliver pressurized air into a patient’s airways. It is also a form of non-invasive therapy to treat obstructive sleep apnea.

CPAP/BiPAP systems have one single basic function - keeping the airways open. The difference lies in the functioning of the machine. While CPAP delivers air at the same pressure throughout inhalation and exhalation, a BiPAP machine has two pressure settings – one inhalation pressure and a lower one for exhalation. This dual setting helps the patient breathe in and out more comfortably because some may find the inhalation pressure difficult to exhale against.
