More On Rolyan Soft Tissue Occipital Release Board

Instructions for the use:
  • A thorough evaluation and diagnosis of the patient should be made prior to the utilization of this device
  • Start by doing the suboccipital release manually for several minutes to acclimate the patient prior to utilization of the release board
  • Position the patient in supine, lying with knees slightly bent. To achieve neutral anatomical alignment of the occiput and the cervical spine, several folded towels or a pillow may have to be used along the thoracic and lumbar spine. In the lumbar area a roll may be used o control the lumbar lordosis
  • Note: Individuals with excessive head-forward posturing may benefit from the above described procedure. This helps retract and extend the occiput. This should be done gradually, especially with extreme head-forward patients
  • The Soft Tissue Occiputal Release Board features five adjustable contact points, four adjustable legs and an adjustable head cup
  • Adjust the contact points (and/or head cup) so minimal suboccipital pressure exists. Gradually increase the height of the contact points
  • Note: After lying on the device for 5-7 minutes, you will get a relaxation of the suboccipital tissue and less pressure may be felt at the base of the skull
  • Lower head cup to increase extension and retraction of the occiput for inhibition of suboccipital tissues. Raise head cup to increase flexion of the occiput on the cervical spine. By adjusting the height of the legs the board underneath the base may be tilted anterior or posterior (for flexion or extension of the occiput) to increase or decrease the effect of the contact points and lengthen or inhibit suboccipital tissue
  • If desired a distraction force can be applied to the suboccipital area (at the atlantooccipital joint) by raising the back legs underneath the base to tilt the head into more flexion. This coupled with the occiput can achieve a greater release of the suboccipital tissues. Having the patient supported in a neutral anatomical alignment as described above in number 2 will further position the head in retraction due to the assistance of gravity placing the occiput in more retraction. This technique has also helped in reducing pressure from the contact points at the base of the skull

Contraindications for Use:
  • Cervical instability
  • Cervical or skull fractures
  • Pathology or disease which may jeopardize patients safety
  • Malignancy
  • Sutures in suboccipital area
  • Skin hypersensitivity
  • Hematoma
  • Intercranial hemorrhage or aneurysm
  • Suboccipital skin lesions which may come in contact with the adjustable contact points
  • Attempts which may peripheralize and/or aggravate the patient's symptoms

Caution:
  • Do not rest occiput on contact points; position contact points at the base of the skull
