What to buy with BioMedical BioMed Fit

What is a 10-50-10 Russian Protocol?

  • Simply put it means
    • 10 seconds of stimulation (muscle contraction) per cycle
    • 50 seconds rest period per cycle
    • Repeating this cycle 10 times
    • After the final cycle, the device beeps and shuts off
  • There are a total of 11 cycles (1st cycle is an Amplitude adjustment period)
    • Amplitude keys will not respond when cycle starts
    • Ramp ON = 1 sec
    • Ramp OFF = 1 sec
    • ON TIME = 10 seconds
    • OFF TIME = 48 seconds (count down is viewed on LCD screen)
    • Total time elapsed is 10 minute
  • Russian specifications in General Specs indicate the term Pulse Train 50% duty cycle at 50 Hz which refers to the amount of bursts per second. Their are in total 50 bursts per second and each burst has a carrier frequency of 2500 Hz.

Why is Russian Therapy used?

  • Generally speaking Russian electrical stimulation intended for athletic training.
  • Russian stimulation uses high frequency sinusoidal waveforms, whereas EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) /NMES (NeuroMuscular Electrical Stimulation) typically uses lower frequency rectangular waveforms.
  • Russian stimulation is intended for strengthening muscles, increasing muscle size, improving muscular endurance, and accelerating muscle recovery.
  • Although EMS/NMES also aids in strengthening muscles, the intensity of a Russian stimulator can be overwhelming and should never be used for individuals with muscle atrophy.
  • EMS/NMES is intended for relaxing muscle spasms, preventing muscle atrophy, increasing blood circulation, maintaining or increasing range of motion, and especially for re-educating the neuromuscular system.

What is Interferential Therapy?

  • Interferential (IF) Therapy works by sending small electrical impulses through the skin.
  • Interferential stimulation is characterized by two alternating current sine waves of differing frequencies that work together to produce an interferential current that is also known as a “Beat Frequency”.
  • One of the two currents is usually held at 4000 Hz and the other can be held constant or varied over a range of 4001 to 4150 Hz. Because of the frequency, the interferential wave meets low impedance when crossing the skin to enter deep into soft tissues.
  • The interferential currents can stimulate sensory, motor and pain fibers. These large impulse fibers interfere with the transmission of the pain messages at the spinal cord level.
  • This deep tissue penetration stimulates parasympathetic nerve fibers for increased blood flow and edema reduction.
  • It utilizes the low electric current to stimulate muscle nerves to achieve the symptomatic relief of chronic intractable pain, post traumatic pain and post-surgical pain.
  • In turn, reducing or eliminating the need for most pain-related drugs.

Precautions:

  • After a surgical procedure where muscle contraction may disrupt the healing process.
  • After an acute trauma or fracture where there is a tendency to hemorrhage.
  • Over the menstruating uterus.
  • Where the sensory nerve damage has caused the loss of normal skin sensation.
  • Equipment not suitable for use in the presence of a flammable anesthetic mixture with air, with oxygen, or nitrous oxide.

Caution:

  • RUS or INF Devices should only be used under medical supervision for adjunctive therapy in the treatment of medical diseases and conditions.
  • Dependent upon government regulation, this device may or may not require a medical prescription.
  • Federal law (USA) restricts the sale by, or on the order of, a physician so licensed by the State. Keep out of reach of children.

Contraindications:

  • Should not be used on patients with cardiac demand pacemakers.
  • Should not be applied over, or in proximity to, cancerous lesions.
  • Should not be used while driving, operating machinery or during any other activity in which involuntary muscle contraction may put the user at undue risk of injury.
  • Should not be applied over the carotid sinus. Severe spasm of the laryngeal and/or pharyngeal muscles may occur when electrodes are placed over the neck or mouth. (contractions may be strong enough to close airway or cause difficulty in breathing.)
  • Stimulation should not be applied transcerebrally (through the head).
  • Adequate precaution should be taken when treating patients with suspected heart problems or epilepsy. Caution should be exercised in the transthoracic application of any stimulation devices so that the introduction of electrical current into the heart does not cause arrhythmias.
  • Safety of electrical stimulation for use during pregnancy has not been established.
  • This device should be kept out of the reach of children.
  • This equipment may be effected by electromagnetic interference. Other electrical equipment in close vicinity may also be effected. If such effects are suspected either switch off the offending equipment or increase the distance between the affected equipment and the equipment causing the interference, or shorten connecting leads.
