What to buy with Littmann Lightweight Stethoscope

How to use a 3M Littmann Stethoscope?

  • Putting your headset on correctly:
    • The ear tips should point in a forward direction as you insert them into your ears.
    • The stethoscope headset is angled to complement the anatomy of the typical ear canal and is designed to provide a comfortable, acoustically-sealed fit.
  • Proper fit and assembly of ear tips:
    • Using the properly sized ear tips: For optimal acoustic performance, it’s important to use the ear tip size that best fits your ear, especially when using soft-sealing ear tips. 3M Littmann Stethoscope ear tips are available in small and large sizes.
    • Tightening your ear tips: While assembling the ear tips, push the small side of the ear tip firmly onto the tube until it snaps fully into place.
  • Adjusting headset tension:
    • You can adjust the tension in the headset for a custom fit for a tight yet comfortable fit.
    • To decrease tension, pull the tubes apart.
    • To increase spring tension, squeeze the eartubes together, crossing them over.
    • Repeat until the desired tension is achieved.
  • Using your tunable diaphragm:
    • To hear low-frequency sounds, rest the chest piece lightly on the patient.
    • To hear high-frequency sounds, apply firm contact pressure to the chest piece.
    • Nearly all 3M Littmann stethoscopes feature at least one tunable diaphragm to eliminate the need to reposition the chest piece to hear different sounds.
  • Converting to a traditional open bell:
    1. The small side of a 3M Littmann dual-head stethoscope chest piece can be converted into a traditional open bell. Use it with the non-chill bell sleeve included.
    2. Pinch the rim of the tunable diaphragm with your thumb and index fingernails. Pull and lift it from the chest piece.
    3. Assemble the non-chill bell sleeve by placing one side of the sleeve on the edge of the bell and then stretching it over and around.
    4. To reassemble your tunable diaphragm, remove the non-chill bell sleeve and insert the flexible end of the diaphragm into the groove of the rim. Slowly roll it over the chest piece edge.
  • Indexing your Littmann dual-head stethoscope:
    • You can select the side of a dual-head stethoscope you want to use by indexing which diaphragm is open to the acoustic path.
    • Simply rotate the stem until it clicks.
    • The mark on the stem should point towards the side to be used.

How to clean 3M Stethoscopes?

  • Mild soap and water
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol
  • 2% bleach solution (may cause tubing discoloration)

Safety Tips for Littmann Stethoscopes

  • If the stethoscope needs to be disinfected, wipe it with 70% isopropyl alcohol solution.
  • Never use hand sanitizer as a cleaning agent, as additives may damage parts of the stethoscope.
  • Do not immerse the stethoscope in any liquid or subject it to any sterilization process.
  • Keep the stethoscope away from extreme heat, cold, oils, and solvents.
  • Tunable diaphragms may be removed from the chest piece, and their surfaces can be wiped with alcohol or soapy water. All the parts should be dried thoroughly before reassembly.
  • Ear tips can be removed from the ear tubes for thorough cleaning. For safety, snap ear tips firmly back onto the ribbed ends of the ear tubes.

3M Littmann Lightweight II S.E. 28" Stethoscope FAQ

What is a tunable diaphragm, and where is the bell on the Lightweight II S.E. stethoscope?

A tunable diaphragm allows the user to listen to low- and high-frequency sounds simply by adjusting the amount of pressure applied at the site of auscultation. It is not necessary to lift the chest piece from the patient, index the stem of the chest piece, and reposition. Rather, use light contact with the chest piece to hear low-frequency sounds (bell mode). Use firm pressure to hear high-frequency sounds (diaphragm mode).

What are the advantages of tunable technology?

Convenience, versatility, and enhanced acoustics. When listening to low-frequency sounds, there is a slight increase in amplitude.

What is the advantage of the oval design?

The oval design allows for better orientation around blood-pressure cuffs and body contours. The easy-to-grasp chestpiece allows for easy movement between auscultation sites.
