Orthopedic walking boots are also known as controlled ankle motion walking boot or CAM boots that are prescribed for stabilizing severe sprains or strains, fractures, tendon or ligament tears in the ankle or foot. These boots are used to limit ankle motion.
A walking boot comprises of
- An inner soft fabric lining with hook and loop fasteners to enclose and cushion the foot and ankle
- A rigid frame designed to restrict motion in the lower leg

CAM boots differ in height ranging from mid-calf to nearly knee-length, depending on the injury they are intended to treat. Some walker boots contain inflatable compartments which can be adjusted by the patient for increased support and comfort.
