What is Belt Restraint?

Restraint belts are used to secure patients to bed frames, gurneys, hospital tables, chairs, or wheelchairs. It consists of a strip of material, normally fabric or mesh, which is applied over a patient's clothing, wrapped around the waist or lap, and then the straps are secured to the chair or bed frame. The restraint belt is a mild, safety-oriented medical restraint widely used in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities. Like any other least restrictive restraints, belt restraints are also used to prevent self-injury and falls or immobilize a patient to assist with medical procedures.

Types of Restraint Belts

There are many kinds of restraint belts, such as lap belt restraints, wrist-waist belts, bed torso belts, etc. The straps of the belts are foam-padded to protect the fragile skin of the patient. They are designed to reduce the risk of infection and cross-contamination. These washable belts can be sterilized between the procedures.

At Health Products For You, we offer restraining belts that are the perfect solution for general patient positioning and safety. We carry a wide assortment of restraint belts, such as Leather Non-Locking Roller Buckle Belts for securing ankle and wrist restraint cuffs, Wrist-Waist Belts to restrain the wrists against the body, and Lap Belt Restraints to hold seated patients safely. We also have One-Piece Safety Belts that offer safety when using a wheelchair, bed, gurney, or gait belt.

Why is it necessary to use a Restraint Belt?

What are the considerations for using restraints?

  1. Apply the belt according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fasten it securely to an immovable part of the bed or chair.
  2. Ensure that the restraint belt is not too tight and that you can slide your fingers beneath it easily.
  3. The belt should not press uncomfortably against the skin, which may cause redness or hamper the patient's blood circulation and respiration.
  4. Patients should be given instructions to call for assistance when they want to get up.
  5. The belts need to be cleaned regularly.
  6. For regular cleaning, wipe with mild soap and warm water. When contaminated with blood-borne pathogens, use one cup of bleach to a gallon of water, then rinse and dry.
  7. Store leather restraint belts in a dry area to prevent mildew and store polyurethane belts away from heat greater than 280°F or open flame.
