Fall prevention alarms do not prevent falls. The purpose of a fall monitor is to provide the earliest possible warning that a patient/resident is attempting to exit their bed or chair and is an immediate risk of falling.

The selection of a fall alarm will vary from patient to patient and facility to facility. Several things need to be considered when selecting a fall monitor. Location – Where will the fall monitors be used; bed or chair? Patient Situation – What patients will I use the fall monitor with? Does a patient have a language barrier? Are there any special circumstances I must consider for this patient? 

No, Alarms do not prevent falls. They alert the care givers whenever a sudden movement is experienced. Therefore greatly reducing the risk of falls and early attention in case of falls.

Wipe alarm case using a soft cloth or damp sponge. You may also wipe down with a bacterial or germ killing spray. If using a pull cord alarm in between patients, it is recommended to replace magnet or pull pins. Do not submerge in water. Do not drop or throw alarm, as this may cause unit to malfunction. Check the alarm after each cleaning.

It is neccessary to check the alarm every time because it may pose a serious risk for patients/residents when the caregiver is away. You must always:

  • Be sure that the alarm is switched to the “ON” position.
  • Check the batteries are in working condition
  • Check if your alarm contains dip switches, ensure they are aligned properly. 
  • Be sure the alarm is not in the silent mode.
