CPAP Machines

CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machines are the most commonly preferred treatment for patients with OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) These machines blow a single pressure airstream to keep the user’s airway from collapsing. Some CPAP devices also provide advanced data that helps in tracking the progress of the ongoing therapy. This data can be used to make necessary changes in the setup like the mask or increase or decrease in pressure of the device to check if the therapy has improved the patient’s condition or not.

How do CPAP devices work?

CPAP machines easy to use and are made up of three basic parts:

  • CPAP motor- The CPAP device consists of a motor which is a compressor basically. This compressor draws in the air which is at the room temperature and compresses it. Then this compressed or pressurized air is delivered to the user. It is possible to adjust the amount of pressure required to keep the airways open. The part of the machine that take in air has a replaceable filter that removes particles and impurities from the air. Some CPAP machines also have an inbuilt humidifier that moistens the air. These machines are good for dry and arid climates where the patients complain of dry mouth, throat or nasal cavity. These devices are extremely quiet.
  • CPAP Hose- These hoses are used to deliver pressurized air from the motor to the mask and in turn to the patient’s upper airway. The diameter of these hoses depend upon the device that is use. The standard length of this tube is around 6 Feet. These hoses also come in the heated form to reduce water retention caused by the humidifiers.
  • CPAP Mask- these are special masks that come in various shapes and sizes as the patient might not be comfortable wearing a misfit mask to sleep. Sizes and shapes vary according to different faces in shape, there are basically three types of masks to choose from: nasal pillows, nasal masks, and full face masks.
