Supporting the Elbow

Supporting the Elbow
Taikhum Sadiq

What is the importance of the elbow?

The elbow is the joint that connects the forearm to the upper arm. It provides the basic movements of the arm and is a flexible joint. It is not weak but is not too strong. There are tow joints in the elbow; one is responsible for the up and down movement whereas the other is responsible for the rotation of the arm and the hand. The tow bones of the forearm are connected to the upper arm by a set of muscles and ligaments in the elbow.

What are the problems associated with the elbow?

One of the major problems is the distal humerus fracture which takes place in the bone that connects the upper arm to the elbow. It is a broad bone and a fracture may result in immobility of the elbow. Muscle tears and sprain usually occur in the upper arm biceps, or the muscles surrounding the ulna and the radius bones. These tears result in inflammation and sever pain.

Nursemaid’s elbow is common condition that affects children. It is also known as partial dislocation and occurs when the child’s arm is pulled with force. It is a very common injury since not a lot of force is required to pull the bone out. Elbow bursitis is the inflammation of the bursae in the elbow joint. It may cause immobility of the joint and also a lot of pain. Osteoarthritis of the elbow results when the cartilage in the elbow is worn out either due to old age or overuse of the elbow.

Who is affected by these problems?

Elbow injuries are common in sports like badminton, baseball, basketball, etc. where the arm is used a lot. Accidents and major jerks can result in the fracture of the elbow and excessive strain can result in muscle damages. Nursemaid’s elbow can be caused easily and usually happens to children while playing a sport or in their other daily activities. Elbow bursitis is caused by either trauma or by prolonged pressure on the elbow.

What are the treatment options?

Fractures and sprains can be cured by exercise and medications but problems like Nursemaid’s elbow and bursitis may require surgery. Bursitis can also be cured by the use of elbow pads and by resting the elbow. Braces and supports are excellent for such purposes as they support the elbow completely and thus enhance the healing process. They also can be used as mediums of other therapies.
