What is a Standard Wear Skin Barrier?

Standard wear skin barriers are designed for semi-formed or formed stools. Thus, they work well for those who have colostomies. Standard wear skin barriers are less resistant to liquidity and have less initial adhesion. Since there is less liquid content in the colostomy output and stoma tends to function less often, a standard skin wafer will not melt out easily. So, a longer wear time can be achieved, up to 5-7 days.

When these barriers are used for ileostomies or urostomies, a shorter wear time is expected, usually 3-4 days. Regular wear ostomy wafers tend to melt out with exposure to frequent and higher volume liquid stool and urine, leading to unwanted peristomal skin exposure and can cause skin irritation if left on for too long. Regular wear skin barriers are available on both drainable and closed pouching systems.

How often should a Standard Wear Barrier be changed?

There is no standard wear time for ostomy wafers. Ostomy skin barriers are typically designed to be worn between 1 to 7 days. Proper fit, good skin hygiene, and sticking to a regular schedule will help maximize the wear time. Following good ostomy care habits, one can wear the skin wafer longer with greater convenience and fewer issues.

Standard wear skin barriers are easier to remove and gentle on the skin but erode more quickly than extended wear skin barriers. Several factors can affect how long one can wear the skin barrier, including:
